Landscape fabric under pea gravel

Fabric does one job well and another badly. Knowing which is which decides whether you should buy any.

Do you need landscape fabric under pea gravel?

For separation, usually yes. For weed control, no. Those are two different jobs, and almost every argument about landscape fabric comes from treating them as one.

Pea gravel is small, round and heavy. On soft ground it presses into the soil, and you lose depth quietly over the first year or two. A woven geotextile keeps the stone and the soil apart, so the gravel you paid for stays where you spread it. That job it does well for years.

Weeds are different. They do not usually grow up through gravel from the soil below. They start in the dust, leaf litter and grass clippings that settle between the stones, which is above the fabric. Fabric cannot reach that, so it buys you a season or two and then makes the weeding harder.

The rule

Lay fabric to stop stone sinking into soft ground or to keep a drainage layer clean. Do not buy it expecting a weed free path, because that is not a promise it can keep.

The two jobs people expect fabric to do

Separation, which it does well

This is what geotextiles were built for. Under a driveway the base stone would otherwise punch down into soft subgrade, which is how potholes start. Under a path or patio the pea gravel itself migrates into the soil. A separation fabric holds the line between the two layers so the base stays a base.

Washington Rock Quarries, who sell the material, put the practical case for it plainly. Fabric prevents gravel sinking into soil, can reduce the depth of base you need, such as 4 inches of gravel rather than 6, and cuts how often you top up. They also say that unless the subgrade is poor, most gravel driveways do not need it at all.

Weed control, which it does not

Linda Chalker-Scott, extension horticulturist at Washington State University, reviewed the evidence on landscape fabric and reached a blunt conclusion. Geotextiles are not effective weed control solutions for permanent landscapes, and fabrics used in permanent installations eventually become a maintenance problem for appearance, weed control and plant health.

The detail that matters for gravel is this. Any organic matter or soil on top of the fabric speeds up weeds colonising it, so the fabric has to be kept clear of debris to keep working. Weeds then grow on top of and through it, which makes them difficult to remove. Exposed to sunlight, the fabric itself can degrade in as little as one year.

A Penn State Extension article by Lee Stivers describes how that ends. Two decades after installation the mulch above the fabric had broken down into a fine powdery material, weeds rooted through the cloth were almost impossible to pull, and the soil underneath had gone to what the author calls moist pottery. The fabric came out with utility knives and machetes.

Quarries say the same thing in fewer words. Weeds grow in gravel, with or without landscape fabric.

The pattern is simple enough. Fabric belongs where two mineral layers meet and need to stay apart. It does not belong where soil, plants or organic material are part of the plan.

Woven or nonwoven, and what weight

Woven fabric is the one for load. It is stronger in tension, which is what spreads a wheel load across soft ground, and it is the standard choice under driveways, paths and patios. It is less permeable, so water is meant to run off the surface rather than soak straight down, which is why a driveway should be crowned.

Nonwoven fabric is needle punched and much more permeable. It is the choice for drainage and erosion work, where water needs to pass through while the fines stay out of the stone. It is weaker in tension, so it is not the fabric for carrying vehicles.

The thin black weed membrane sold in garden centres is neither of these. It is light, it tears, and it is sold for a job that fabric cannot do anyway.

If you want something more solid than a marketing weight, ask for fabric that meets AASHTO M288, the national specification used in highway work. It covers separation, stabilisation and subsurface drainage among other uses, and sets minimum values for grab strength, tear, puncture, permittivity and apparent opening size, graded into classes by how much abuse the fabric has to survive. A supplier who can quote an M288 class is selling engineering fabric. A garden centre selling weed barrier cannot.

How to lay it so it keeps working

  1. Excavate and grade first. Fabric laid on a rutted, uncompacted surface just follows the ruts.
  2. Compact the subgrade before anything goes down, and slope it so water drains away.
  3. Roll the fabric out flat and overlap every seam by 12 inches, with the uphill sheet lying over the downhill one so water and fines cannot work into the joint.
  4. Pin the edges and seams with landscape staples so the fabric cannot creep while you load stone onto it.
  5. Cover it the same day. Sunlight is what destroys geotextile, and an exposed sheet can degrade within a year.
  6. Spread stone from on top of the placed material, not by driving or tracking directly on the bare fabric.
  7. Keep the cover depth up. 2 to 3 inches of pea gravel on a path, 4 to 6 inches of compacted base under a driveway. Where fabric shows through, the gravel is too thin.
  8. Edge the area. Rounded stone migrates sideways regardless of what is underneath it.

What to do instead of trusting fabric with the weeds

If weeds are the real worry, spend the effort on the things that actually control them.

  • Keep the surface clean. Blow or rake leaves and clippings off the gravel. Removing that layer removes the seedbed, which is the single most effective thing you can do.
  • Lay enough depth. 2 inches for ground cover, 3 inches for paths and patios. Thin gravel is bare soil with decoration.
  • Compact the base. A dense base leaves less room for roots and less movement for seed to settle into.
  • Top up. Pea gravel settles 5 to 10 percent in the first month, and a topped up surface holds together better than a thin one.
  • Spot treat early. Weeds in loose gravel pull out easily when they are small. Weeds rooted through fabric do not.
  • In planting beds, use organic mulch. That is the Washington State University recommendation, because mulch can be topped up over the life of a bed without damaging what is growing in it.

What fabric costs

Materials run roughly $0.05 to $0.25 per square foot depending on weight and type. Installed, the Homewyse national average for May 2026 is $0.48 to $0.99 per square foot.

On a 12 by 12 ft patio that is about $7 to $36 in fabric against roughly $174 of pea gravel delivered. It is a small line on the bill, which is an argument for buying the right fabric rather than the cheapest. The cost calculator prices the gravel, base and delivery together.

Landscape fabric FAQ

For separation, usually yes. On soft or clay soil a woven geotextile stops the stone pressing down into the ground and disappearing. For weed control, no. Fabric slows weeds for a season or two, then weeds root in the debris that collects on top of it.

Not for long. Weed seed blows into the gravel and germinates in the leaf litter and dust that collect between the stones, above the fabric. Washington State University extension research found weeds eventually grow on top of and through geotextiles, which makes them harder to pull than weeds in bare gravel.

Woven for anything carrying weight, such as a driveway, path or patio, because it has the tensile strength to spread the load. Nonwoven for drainage work such as a French drain or a dry creek bed, because water passes through it far more freely.

Suppliers generally suggest 3 to 4 oz per square yard on firm, well drained ground, 4 to 6 oz for most residential driveways, and 6 to 8 oz on soft clay or where delivery trucks will drive. Ask for a fabric that meets AASHTO M288 for separation rather than garden centre weed membrane.

You can, and on firm, well drained ground with light foot traffic it is fine. On soft ground the stone works its way into the soil and you lose depth every year. Fabric or a compacted crushed stone base stops that.

Buried and kept out of sunlight it can last many years. Exposed it degrades quickly, in as little as one year according to Washington State University extension. Keep it covered by the full depth of gravel and repair any spot where it works its way to the surface.
